The Pursuit of Actual Happiness

“Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” is a well-known phrase in the United States Declaration of Independence. This phrase gives three examples of the “unalienable rights” which the Declaration says have been given to all human beings by their Creator, and which governments are created to protect. But where did this go????

The Pursuit of Actual Happiness

I have rendered myself to the cause

And taken myself hostage

As I try to climb over

These apparent and concrete walls

Gathering my wind

Right after I cringe

At the mere fact

That this world sorely lacks

The energy and the pursuit of good

With many waiting with hope

But very misunderstood

And if they could

Wave a magic wand over it all

And produce instant change

So that no one else of moral character

Would ever fall again

And begin to display

The much need picture as the new trend

Walking along on pebbles

Laid out by the many rebels

That can only see

Just three feet in from of them

Hardly the bigger picture here

As the good and welfare

Of humankind

Just continues to rewind

With time

And can’t seem to find

Nothing else but what we despise

And coming up short

Of a virtual enterprise

That removes the lies

And leaves the real truth behind

Taking so many out of the equation

Right before their very eyes

While also being spied on

With freedoms being removed daily

Just after dawn

In every direction

But I intend to

Make awareness

Through poetical expression

And give off a better impression

Than the constant greed and oppression

And unmet needs covered over in aggression

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness

But where exactly?

And for whom does this truly apply?

We need to start asking more questions

That begins with the word “why”

And to say goodbye to anything

Not conducive to removing

Sad and painful tears from the eyes

Something is better than nothing right?

Most are okay with this

And would just rather live life

With half of a light illuminated

This simply can’t be stated enough

For the times we reside in

Are very rough to say the least

With peace on the way out

As the hatred and greed increase

Barely living hand to mouth

While the privileged continue

To just move about

Enough to make anyone

Scream and shout

Hoping to severely improve

Upon the circumstances

While continuing to live subpar

Underneath the pursuit of actual happiness
